TRIP TO MICTLÁN

Mictlán, “Region of the dead”, was for the ancient Mexica the final destination of the souls that left their bodies naturally. It was the last stage of the path that the dead undertook after facing various tests while passing through the nine strata of the underworld. Upon arriving with the offerings they carried for the gods, they were received by Mictlantecutli and Mictecacíhuatl, lords of death, who welcomed them to find eternal rest.
