Design Inspiration
According to legend, the gods created the sun, Tonatiuh, and placed him among the stars, establishing the universal order. Tonatiuh descended into Mictlán—the realm of the dead—where he briefly illuminated the destiny of departed souls. Xólotl, twin of Quetzalcóatl, carried him upon his back and guided him back to the heavens.
The ancient Mexicas immortalized this myth on the monumental stone devoted to the sun. At its center appears Tonatiuh’s face, his tongue extended—a reference to his demand for sacrifice to sustain his journey across the sky and continue illuminating the earth.
